Navigating a crisis as a leader is an immense responsibility that requires clarity, composure, and decisive action. In my career, I’ve helped leaders navigate small and large crises (read: bad employee survey results, COVID, awful go-lives, extreme resistance) etc. I’m sharing ten essential tips to help guide you through challenging times with confidence:

  1. Your demeanor is everything: Take a moment to breathe and collect your thoughts before addressing your team.Maintaining calmness under pressure reassures others and helps your team think clearly.

  2. Keep your team in the loop: Transparency builds trust. Keep your team informed about the crisis, the steps being taken, and any changes that may occur.

  3. Make decisions, no matter how hard: Weigh your options carefully, consult with your advisors, and then take decisive action.

  4. Trust your team: Identify the most critical issues that need immediate attention and delegate accordingly.

  5. Be Flexible: Be prepared to adapt your strategies as new information emerges. Flexibility allows you to pivot and respond well to changing circumstances.

  6. Keep that vision front and center: Even in the midst of a crisis, keep your long-term vision in sight. Remind your team of your organization’s goals and values, and how they can guide your response to the current situation. This helps maintain focus and purpose.

  7. Seek Advice: Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from experts or those with experience in similar crises. Leveraging external knowledge can provide new perspectives and solutions that you might not have considered.

  8. Take Care of You: Leadership during a crisis can be draining. Ensure that you are also looking after your own well-being. Remember - your team wants a healthy leader, not an absent one.

  9. Reflection: Analyze what worked, what didn’t, and how you can improve your crisis management strategies for the future (and document it).

I saved the best for last.

10. Learn to balance letting go and leaning in: Learning to balance letting go (you can’t solve everything) and leaning in (solving the critical few) is probably the most underrated but important tip I can give you. Yep, that’s Biden and Harris for ya. It’s a brat summer after all, isn’t it?

By incorporating these tips, you can navigate crises with a steady hand, inspire confidence in your team, and emerge stronger on the other side. Feel free to download my article below! Check out my article on change leadership as well.
